Halloween time is by far my favorite time of the year!
Autumn brings the pagan festival of Samhain which marks the time when the veil between the living and the dead is at its weakest.
In theory and imagination that allows for all the ghosts, ghouls, undead, and hauntings that we traditionally commercialize. In practice though, it is the perfect time to welcome in the darkness that comes with the colder months (in the northern hemisphere at least...). We also get to have bonfires and dress as the spirits so as to blend in and not attract any unwanted attention.
There is also the ever-present harvest festival... Which at its core is exciting in and of itself, a celebration of the years bounty. The idea of going from house to house resembles the old tradition of the poor going from farm to farm begging for spare food... The bits that would be considered "ugly food" now. The farmers had the opportunity to gift the beggars and helps set them up for a good prosperous winter, or turn them away with nothing. We all know the phrase 'trick or treat' right? Well the beggars would either get a treat or they would come back and play a trick...
Then there's all of the fun modern traditions, dressing up in fun, sexy, playful costumes... Parties with bowls full of peeled eyeballs, bats wings, gored intestines, dismembered fingers... Everything that represents the gross, horrific, fear filled world of Gothic oddities. Don't forget, the adorable celebrations where we send our vulnerable tiny humans door to door begging for candy dressed as the most ferocious 2 ft tall werewolf you've ever seen...
All in all, I'm here for it.
Bathe me in the blood of virgins, feed me the spoils of my neighbor, and fuck me under the full moon as we enchant the land and call forth a mild winter as we put summer to sleep.
xoxo
